| Alloy 309 is primarily used at elevated temperature to take advantage of their oxidation resistance. Alloy 309 is resistant to aqueous corrosion due the high chromium and nickel contents.
The higher nickel content of 309 Stainless provides marginal improvement with respect to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) compared to the 18-8 stainless steels, Alloy 309 austenitic stainless steels remain susceptible to this form of attack.
